News - Mar 27

Recently, we had Year 5 and 6 students in from four local primaries (Beer, Seaton, St Mary's and All Saints) to have an introduction to the sport of orienteering.

We started by looking at different map types and learning about scale, how to interpret contours, and what different symbols mean. We then learnt about how a compass works and following different bearings, leading to a challenge where the primary students navigated around a set route on a human compass (made up of our wonderful sports leaders).

They then worked in pairs or small groups, with the support of a sports leader, to navigate their way around different orienteering courses. They were set the challenge of successfully completing as many courses as possible within a given time, All teams did brilliantly, with one team managing to successfully navigate their way around five separate courses within the time.
