Three Year 9 students and two teachers recently took part in the Met Office Careers Camp. This is part of the programme of activities in the Met Office Schools Partnership, in which schools in the region are working with the Met Office to create resources for teaching and learning, trialling them in classrooms and developing them for use in schools nationally, as well as consulting on their new work experience programme and other early career opportunities.

Diya C, Enzo M and Thea P were accompanied by Mrs Gill and Mr Davidson, joining a number of other schools in being ‘colleagues’ of Met Office staff for the day. They provided us with a workspace, and two members of Met Office staff to accompany us as we learned more about their work.

We were admitted to the Operations Room, from which their forecasts are issued, including ‘Space Weather’ – we met the person who spotted the once-in-20 years solar event that caused the northern lights we could observe from here in May. They also showed us the range of observing equipment that they have used and now use. We then discussed areas of learning that are less engaging or easy to access, their current job application process, and gave feedback on this and the day of activities more broadly.

Met Office staff will use our feedback and suggestions to develop learning resources, and enhance their careers information and application processes, and then return to us with further consultation next year.
