Last week, the Year 13 Leavers’ Concert took place. The audience was treated to a simply brilliant menu of musical performances. The music selection was eclectic, highlighting the range of instruments, voices and tastes. This concert enabled Year 13 students the chance to perform a solo of their choice often accompanied by the orchestra.

There was a real variety of musical styles from Romantic cello concertos to Musical Theatre duets and even a kazoo performance. Everyone performed challenging pieces exceptionally well. Willow gave an outstanding performance from Saint Saens cello concerto accompanied by the orchestra. Likewise, Annie’s rendition of ‘Sicilienne’, by Faure was also performed musically and accompanied by the orchestra conducted by Mrs Lester.

Vocal performances from Cerys, Annie, Lucy, Sophie, Ed, Peter, Freddie and Perran also highlighted the talents of our Year 13, many of whom have been singing at school events since joining Junior Choir in Year 7. Anouska and Annie represented woodwind with both solos and a stunning duet on the flute. The evening concluded with another stunning concerto performance. This time, Alice played part of Elgar’s Cello Concerto accompanied by Mrs Greenwood, followed by a group choral rendition of ‘Let the River Run’ to conclude this farewell concert. The words of this final song provide great hope and challenge to those listening.

The abilities as evidenced at this concert were astounding and the joy that they brought to the audience was priceless. Thank you so much to all the performers for your hours of practice and perseverance. The beautiful sounds that were created appeared so effortless that it looked like it was easy; it is not. The concert demonstrated so clearly that students’ expertise emerges from perseverance, resilience and determination which are life enhancing traits that will serve the students so well in their future lives.
