News - Mar 26

On Saturday 16th March, 19 of our Year 10-12 student ambassadors went to the Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth to run Hands-On Science activities and Rocket launches at the annual Science Week Family Day.

The student ambassadors demonstrated CD Hovercraft, Retroreflectors, Polarisation and made sundials and constellation tubes as well as working on other activities for the younger visitors to the observatory. These activities and the rocket launches were enjoyed by all of the visitors, though everybody did get a bit wet during the launches as a cloud had settled on the observatory for most of the day. At least we can say that the rockets did reach the clouds.

Euan B in Year 12 made a notable contribution by staying for the whole event (10.45am-5.15pm) and demonstrating 5 different activities over the course of the day.

Thank you to Mrs Swarbrick, Mrs Simpson, Mr Davidson and Mr Smith for supporting our students on the day, and a special thanks to Mrs Courtney-Baker, our Physics Technician, for staying for the whole event to ensure that all of the activities ran smoothly. Thank you too to all of the Science Technicians for preparing the resources for all the activities.
