Sixth Form students take part in Model UN event
BackNews - Jul 18
Recently, a group of Sixth Form students, supported by Ms Killick and Mr Stephan, ran a Model United Nations conference in the Study Centre. As Press Officer for the event, Sabina S (Y12) writes:
The CGS Model United Nations 2023 gathered on 11th July, where 15 countries and their debate-ready delegates discussed some of the most pressing global issues, aiming to seek solutions to these conflicts and crises.
A first-rate team of seven prepared and fully trained (thanks to Ms Killick and Mr Stephan) Chairs and Vice-Chairs from Year 12 led the day of debate to work with 50 delegates in their Committees to attempt to reach resolution.
Our Committees - Human Rights, Economic and Science & Technology - discussed Women's Reproductive Rights, De-Growth, and the regulation of Artificial Intelligence, and at midday when a Ukrainian nuclear power plant crisis struck, they were all drawn together in the General Assembly, where many resounding and passionate speeches were made.
At the end, several delegates were commended for their notable contributions during the day: the USA (Human Rights), France (Economic), and Russia (Science & Technology) received the highly commended award for their hard work, and Ukraine won the Highly Commended Country award.
After this year's success and enjoyment from all participants, we look forward to the Model UN hopefully returning next year with a new set of debate-ready delegates!
