Students and staff take part in annual sports day
BackNews - Jul 18
As the black clouds gave way to grey ones, the school took to the fields in the blazing colours of Oak, Elm, Ash, Cedar and Beech as students battled for the CGS Sports Day Trophy. The students were amazing, both on and off the track, as school records tumbled in both track and field events. It was fantastic to see the look of determination on the faces of all the competitors as everyone was so keen to earn points for their House. Additionally, the spectators cheered on each of their House gladiators with that gusto normally reserved for famous faces on the screen. Not only were the winners cheered home but, more significantly, those coming in at the end but still running with hope and determination received a huge roar.
The overall results were close with Houses claiming individual Year prizes but, overall, Beech House was the winner. We still await the news of the overall winner of the CGS House Cup 2023 as that will be presented in the final assembly of the year.
Perhaps the biggest cheer was reserved for the staff relay race. Last year Mr Rowe (Physics) had humiliated Mr Rowe (PE) by cruising past him on the final straight to secure a resounding victory for his team. During this academic year, the Rowe v Rowe sporting competitions have been a great source of amusement and, indeed, provided a focus for charitable donations. Yesterday, everyone was keen to discover the outcome of this year’s race. Mr Rowe (PE) fresh from his great batting performance on the staff cricket team was looking tense and nervous as he waited for the bend where the final changeover would take place. He need not have looked so worried due to the brilliant running of Mr Gosling, Miss Hunt and Mr Robinson who had gained a large lead as the baton was handed over. Mr Rowe (PE) was transfixed on the finishing line as he dashed the 100m to glory! The PE Department had beaten the Physics Team, they restored their honour and the natural order of the world had been renewed.
It was great that three teams of staff ran the race and were prepared to ‘have a go’ – well done and, judging by the loud and deafening cheers, the students obviously enjoyed the event. Bring on next year!
