Colyton Grammar School students play in under-16 Devon Cup Football Final
BackNews - May 11
Recently, Colyton Grammar School’s under-16 football team played in the Devon Cup Final in Newton Abbot. The boys were looking forward to the game, as when these sides previously met in Year 7, the Ivybridge side had won by the score of 7-1, meaning that this game was a chance for revenge.
Conditions for the game were perfect, and the boys started the game well, having their share of the early possession. From a fast counterattack, Ivybridge took the lead with a cross seeing their left winger in a space at the back post to guide the ball into the net. Ivybridge went on to score two more goals in quick succession, both headed goals from set piece plays.
Colyton kept their composure, despite being 3-0 down and started to play some attractive football. Having shrugged off the early nerves and by returning to their usual style of play, it didn’t take long for Colyton to get onto the scoresheet. A lovely pass split the Ivybridge defence and Nathan played the ball into the goal’s bottom corner. By half time, the score was 3-1 to Ivybridge.
Our team came out firing for the second half of the game, forcing the Ivybridge goalkeeper to make a couple of brilliant saves. After a fine bit of play down the wing, the ball eventually ended up in the back of the net with Nathan scoring his second goal of the game. As the match neared the end, the boys continued to attack putting Ivybridge under a serious amount of pressure but unfortunately Colyton could not score a third goal and the game ended with a score of 3-2 with Ivybridge coming away victorious.
Nevertheless, our boys gave everything and no one’s efforts could be faulted. Thank you to all the parents who came to support and have supported along the way to the final. We as a school are super proud of all involved and there is always next year.
