Recently, six Colyton Grammar School students had the opportunity to attend the finals of the Science and Innovation Competition at Imperial College, London.

This competition focussed on solving, or working towards solving, one of the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development. After an initial presentation of ideas through a video, two groups from Colyton Grammar School were invited to the final. This included pupils of different age groups from across the country, and internationally.

Alma and Maria’s project idea was to send nutritious freeze-dried parcels to impoverished countries and reduce food waste in higher income countries, whilst Erin, Katie, Martha and Jess designed a robotic turtle that would remove microplastics from our oceans.

Here is what Maria thought of the day: “The experience was incredible, we presented in front of a panel of experts from different fields of science and provided samples of our developed product for them to taste. We enjoyed the presentations of the other teams, which had interesting and original ideas. While disappointed that we didn’t win, it had still been an incredible experience that we all really enjoyed and learnt from. I would love to do it again next year.”

We did not win this time, but the girls who took part should be very proud. To be able to design an original idea and present to an audience that included several highly academic and well renowned judges is a fantastic achievement
