Colyton Grammar School students display their skill in a variety of sport

n hockey our under-14 girls team played in an East Devon competition. They beat Uffculme in the first game, gaining momentum as the match progressed. Nina W stepped up to be the team’s GK and did not disappoint, keeping a clean sheet in the first game. The second game was a close match against Kings, with end-to-end action. The team just missed the right post early in the game and had a few penalty corners. Kings capitalised on their opportunities and put two of their chances away to win the game by a two-goal margin. Our girls played well and are looking forward to the next season and more encounters with local and other teams further afield in national competitions. Again, disappointing that more schools are not involved in the East Devon competitions.
The under-15 boys team faced Uffculme on the football pitch in the semi-final of the East Devon Cup. In testing conditions, the boys played extremely well, starting the game quickly and scoring in the first five minutes. With Uffculme scoring three goals in quick succession, the lead didn’t last long but a tweak to the formation and a couple of substitutions seemed to make the difference in the second half. After a sustained period of pressure our team scored two goals, levelling the score with five minutes to go. With minutes to spare, the boys threw everything at it and scored with the final kick of the game bringing the final score to Colyton 4 – Uffculme 3. A very exciting match and a wonderful performance from the team. Good luck in the final where the team will face Exmouth.
A great day of rugby was had at the County 7s, with our under-15s team playing in the round robin league alongside Blundell’s, Shebbear College, Coombeshead and Paignton. The boys showcased great talent and work rate, playing extremely well. Spirits were high after victories against Paignton and Coombehead. Unfortunately, the team did lose against Blundell’s and Shebbear but it was a great learning curve for the students. Overall Colyton finished in third place, a great achievement that the students should be proud of. Well done to all involved.
On the running track, we are delighted that we had seven students running at the English Cross-Country Championships in Nottingham recently. It is a great achievement to reach this national level of competition. Congratulations to Innes F, Scarlett L, Becky M, Olly M, Lyra W, Sam S and Martin F.
In addition to taking part in this championship, Innes F has won the National Cross-Country championships and the Intercounty Cross-Country championships, an amazing achievement!
