We were privileged to have Lydia Millar, who left Colyton in 2015 and studied Graphic Design at Kingston University, visit to talk to our Art students about her career path and current work.
Lydia currently works for Studio Exception, who design bespoke products to enable all users ease of access – ‘inclusive design’. One example is the Oxo Good Grip Peeler (included in the MoMA, New York product design collection) which was designed by her company Studio Exception. This product originated from the inspiration of the handlebar grip on BMX bikes. By designing inclusively, they claim to be able to reach four times the amount the consumers. The diversity of her current role is impressive – Lydia has worked with Selfridges, Land Rover, NHS and the BBC to date. Day to day, she strives to solve community problems via often unexpected strategies using product design, graphics, UX Design and traditional service design along with her ingenuity and human compassion. It is impressive work and very rewarding.
This was a fascinating talk which demonstrated how there are many, often unexpected, career avenues in Art.
